About Weekend Golfers

Why Weekend Golfers Exists

Weekend Golfers began in 2012 as a coaching project between PGA Professional Richard Lawless and me while Richard was my coach at The Wiltshire Golf Club.

Richard provided the coaching and instruction, while I filmed the lessons, built the website and organised what gradually became a substantial library of golf coaching material.

Richard hasn’t been actively involved with the website for several years, but his contribution remains an important part of Weekend Golfers. The Coaching Library we created together is still here because good golf fundamentals don’t suddenly become irrelevant when a new driver or swing theory appears.

Richard will always have a place on Weekend Golfers through the coaching we created together, and the door remains open should he ever want to contribute again.

Over the years, I continued running the website and Weekend Golfers gradually became broader than the original coaching project. That evolution largely reflected my own experience of playing the game.

Golf isn’t only about improving a swing. It is also about practising, learning how to score, discovering courses, buying and using equipment, making mistakes, meeting people and accumulating the rounds and experiences that keep us coming back.

That is what Weekend Golfers is today.

Who I Am

I’m Steve King, and Weekend Golfers is now something I run and write myself. I’ve been playing golf for approximately 25 years and remain an active club golfer.

I practise, take lessons, play competitive and social golf, experiment with equipment and continue trying to understand how to get the most from the game.

I’m less interested these days in chasing the perfect golf swing or spectacular shots. I’m much more interested in predictable golf, understanding my own game, making better decisions and becoming more consistent with the ability I already have.

I still take lessons and currently work on my own game with PGA Professional Chris Tyson.

I also caddie for Chris when he plays competitively, which gives me a different perspective on golf from the one I get playing my own rounds.

Being alongside a professional golfer allows me to see the decisions, routines, course management and reactions to good and bad shots that aren’t always obvious when watching from outside the ropes.

I’m not trying to learn how to play like a professional. I’m interested in identifying the things I see that might genuinely help me as an amateur golfer and sharing those experiences with other weekend golfers.

Chris is part of my golf today, just as Richard was an important part of its earlier years. Other professionals, golfers, courses and experiences will undoubtedly influence what I write about in the future.

Weekend Golfers isn’t written from the perspective of someone who has solved golf.

I haven’t.

It documents what I’m learning while I continue playing it.

Explore Weekend Golfers

Weekend Golfers is built around the different parts of the game I enjoy and continue to learn from.

  • Playing Golf – My rounds, competitions, experiences and the occasional good score.
  • Practising Golf – Working on my game, taking lessons and trying to become more consistent.
  • Caddying – My experiences carrying the bag for PGA Professional Chris Tyson at tournament events.
  • Golf Courses – Courses we’ve played, including hole-by-hole videos, photographs and personal observations.
  • Golf Equipment – Equipment I’ve bought, used and tested, along with practical advice from those experiences.
  • Free Golf Coaching – Our original coaching library with PGA Professional Richard Lawless, now freely available on YouTube and Weekend Golfers.

Together, these sections reflect what Weekend Golfers has become: a record of playing, practising and learning about golf through real experiences.

My Approach

I believe golf should be enjoyable, but that doesn’t mean I don’t care about playing well.

I enjoy improving, competing, learning and seeing how good I can become. What has changed over time is my understanding of how to get there.

I don’t believe most golfers need the newest equipment, a constantly changing swing or hours on the range every week.

For me, improvement increasingly comes from understanding my own game, practising with purpose, making better decisions and becoming comfortable enough on the golf course to trust what I’ve learned.

My own playing philosophy is becoming increasingly simple:

Pick conservative targets, then be aggressive in execution.

Weekend Golfers documents what happens while I try to live up to that.

Looking Ahead

Weekend Golfers isn’t exactly the same website Richard and I started in 2012, and I don’t think it should pretend to be.

The site has changed because my golf has changed. What I want to preserve is the history and knowledge already here while continuing to add new experiences as they happen.

Richard and the Coaching Library we created together remain an important part of that history, while the site continues to develop through my own playing, practice, equipment, courses, caddying and whatever else golf puts in front of me.

I don’t know exactly what Weekend Golfers will contain five or ten years from now.

As long as I’m still playing, learning and finding things worth sharing, there will be something to write about.
